Ghost of Tsushima Armor Guide – How To Get, Effects, More

Ghost of Tsushima allows players to sneak their way around, fight everything that moves, or a mix of both. In this guide, we will talk about the various armor sets players can find in Ghost of Tsushima that will allow them to play the game the way they want.

Ghost of Tsushima: All Armor Sets

There are a total of 15 armor sets that players can collect in the game. Each of these armor sets (with one exception) have three skills that will aid players during their playthrough, be it by increasing their HP, making it harder to detect the player, and more.

Additionally, players can freely change the armor they have equipped, allowing for flexibility during combat (or stealth).

Now, let’s move on to our guide on all of the armor sets in Ghost of Tsushima.

Broken Armor

The Broken Armor is the first armor set that players will have, as it is the one they start with. This armor set has no skills whatsoever, and offers little to no protection from the various dangers Jin will face in the game.

There is no merit to equipping this armor in the game, except for a challenge run.

Hero of Tsushima Armor

The Hero of Tsushima Armor comes with the game’s Digital Deluxe Edition, as well as the Director’s Cut. After making some progress through the game, players will receive this armor for free.

Skills:

  • Increase to Health
  • Reduces all damage

This is a decent Armor set, designed to help players along during the early parts of the game. It does, however, become outclassed by the other more specialized armors down the line.

Players can upgrade this armor after entering New Game +. However, despite that, it’s still just an early-game armor set.

Traveler’s Attire

Players can obtain the Traveler’s Attire for free the first time they talk to a merchant in the game’s map.

Skills:

  • Track Artifacts with the Guiding Wind
  • Traveling clears more fog of war on the map
  • Controller will vibrate when near an artifact

This is the primary exploration armor set that players will use when exploring in Ghost of Tsushima. It allows players to track down the game’s various collectibles, as well as reveal more of the map as they make their way through it.

The downside of this armor is its lack of defensive capabilities. All of its skills are designed for exploration, so make sure to quickly switch out of this armor when entering combat.

Samurai Clan Armor

Players can acquire the Samurai Clan Armor during Lady Masako’s questline. During said questline, players will find themselves in the Golden Temple. Talking to the armorer there will reward the player with the Samurai Clan Armor.

Skills:

  • Reduces all incoming damage
  • Increases health
  • Taking damage grants Resolve

This is a balanced armor set designed to be taken into face-to-face combat. The damage reduction and health increase are good for combat, while the Resolve regeneration allows the player to charge up heals when they take damage.

Players can actually play through the entire game while wearing this armor thanks to its well-balanced skills. Its downside is that it’s an armor that focuses primarily on survivability, so players will have to look elsewhere if they want bonuses in stealth, damage, or both.

Tadayori’s Armor

Players can acquire this armor set in the Mythic Tale “The Legend of Tadayori”. The player will receive the armor upon completion of the Mythic Tale.

Skills:

  • Increases nocking and reload speed
  • Increases total Concentration time
  • Headshots restore Concentration

This is arguably the best armor set for those who want to focus on using bows, as all of its skills complement ranged combat. The increased nocking and reload speed is great for when you want to shoot multiple enemies in a row, while the increased Concentration time allows you to hit more targets in slow motion.

This armor set’s only weakness is that it does not have anything for melee combat or survivability. As such, it’s better to have this armor set equipped when engaging enemies from afar, then switching to another once enemies come close, or if the player decides to engage.

Archery Master’s Attire

This unique armor set used to be available once players enter New Game+ in Ghost of Tsushima. However, following the release of the Director’s Cut, it instead became a dye option for Tadayori’s Armor. Players who already had the armor set, however. were able to keep it.

It has the exact same skills as Tadayori’s armor, however it offers a 45% increase to nocking and reload speed and an additional 3 seconds to Concentration time (compared to 30% and 2 seconds from Tadayori’s Armor). However, as mentioned above, players can no longer get this armor set.

Ronin Attire

Players can obtain the Ronin Attire during the main mission “Blood on the Grass”.

Skills:

  • Reduces enemy detection speed
  • Increase to Melee damage
  • After leaving pampas grass while crouched, enemies will be slow to detect you

This is the stealth armor of the game, and it does a great job being one. When partnered with various Charms, players will become basically undetectable in the game, especially if there is pampas grass in the vicinity. In a pinch, players can even use this armor to engage in swordfights.

The armor’s downside is that while it excels in stealth, and is decent at swordfights, it does not have any ranged capabilities or survivability. It’s purely meant for stealth, so players using this armor must adopt a stealthy playstyle at all times.

Gosaku’s Armor

Players can acquire this armor set in the Mythic Tale “The Unbreakable Gosaku”. The player will receive the armor upon completion of the Mythic Tale.

Skills:

  • Increase to health
  • Increase to Stagger Damage
  • Killing a Staggered enemy restores health

This is perhaps the best combat armor, providing the best survivability out of all the armors in the game. The increase to health, as well as the increase Stagger damage allows the player to tank quite a few hits, all while easily breaking through enemy defenses.

The armor’s biggest strength is its health recovery after defeating a Staggered enemy. This synergizes well with the increase to Stagger Damage, basically guaranteeing you health recovery with each enemy you face.

Its only real downside is that it does not have stealth or ranged capabilities. Then again, if you’re already in melee combat, then there’s no need for stealth and ranged attacks anyway.

Kensei Armor

Players can acquire this armor set in the Mythic Tale “The Six Blades of Kojiro”. The player will receive the armor upon completion of the Mythic Tale.

Skills:

  • Increase to Resolve gains
  • Ghost Weapons deal more damage
  • Striking an enemy with a Ghost Weapon causes the enemy to deal less damage and receive more damage

This armor is perfect for players who like using the game’s various Ghost Weapons, like the Kunai, Bombs, and the like. Said Ghost Weapons will deal more damage, and will even debuff enemies that get hit by them. Not only that, but the increase to Resolve gains is good for charging up healing and revives.

The downside of this armor is that it restricts the player to a Ghost Weapon-centered playstyle. Ghost Weapons are consumable, so if the player runs out of them, two of the armor set’s skills are immediately useless.

Deadly Rival’s Attire

This unique armor set is available once players enter New Game+ in Ghost of Tsushima. Gather 25 Ghost flowers and hand it over to Baku the Voiceless to unlock this armor set.

Skills:

  • Increase to health
  • Increase to melee damage
  • Ghost Weapons deal more damage

This armor set is similar to the Kensei Armor, but with some key differences. For starters, it sacrifices the Resolve gains and enemy debuff for a Health and melee damage increase. This makes it a more balanced version of the Kensei Armor, giving the player more damage and survivability.

Sakai Clan Armor

Players can obtain the Sakai Clan Armor during the main mission “Ghosts from the Past”.

Skills:

  • Increase to Melee damage
  • Increase to health
  • Increase to Standoff Streak. Winning a Standoff has a chance to Terrify nearby enemies.

This is another combat armor set, with a focus on ending fights before they even begin. Fully upgraded, it will allow the player to Standoff against up to three enemies. With some Technique upgrades, players will be able to Standoff against a grand total of five enemies with this Armor set.

If the player is tired of Stealth, and wants to take down an enemy patrol easily, donning this armor and starting a Standoff is perhaps the easiest way to defeat most, if not all, of the enemies in said patrol.

Much like Gosaku’s armor, this armor set’s only real downside is its lack of stealth and ranged capabilities.

Ghost Armor

Players can obtain the Ghost Armor during the main mission “Ghosts from the Past”.

Skills:

  • Reduces enemy detection speed
  • Reduces the number of kills needed to enter the Ghost Stance
  • Kills have a chance to Terrify a nearby enemy

This is another good stealth armor set, and one that utilizes Ghost of Tsushima’s most iconic combat feature: Ghost Stance. The Ghost Stance requires players to kill a total of 7 enemies without taking damage to activate, and the Ghost Armor reduces that requirement to 5 kills.

This allows players to take down enemy camps with ease by stealth killing five enemies, then activating Ghost Stance to defeat the rest. Additionally, players can even use this in melee combat, as the 30% chance to Terrify nearby enemies is actually very useful.

The Ghost Armor’s downside is its lack of survivability, thanks to it being a primarily stealth armor. While taking it into melee combat is fine, players will need to parry and dodge to build up the Ghost Stance meter.

Mongol Commander’s Armor

Players can acquire this armor set in the Tale “Fit for a Khan” in Act 3. The player will receive the armor upon gathering all of the armor pieces.

Skills:

  • Increase to health
  • Reduces all damage
  • Disguises you while out of combat, reducing Mongol detection speed

If your idea of stealth is similar to Agent 47, and would like to disguise yourself, then the Mongol Commander’s Armor is perfect for you. When not in combat, Mongols who see you while in this armor will not be able to detect you quickly, making it possible for you to ride past Mongol patrols with ease.

Players can even choose to just wear this armor and approach a Mongol patrol before taking them all down in melee combat. After all, this armor also increases the player’s survivability.

The downside of this armor is that, all things considered, there are better options for the player. They can just wear the Ronin Attire for stealth, or Gosaku’s Armor for melee survivability. The Disguise feature is fun, but ultimately very niche.

Fundoshi

The player unlocks the Fundoshi upon finding all of the Hot Springs in Tsushima.

Skills:

  • Running and sprinting no longer create noise.
  • Reduces enemy detection speed (when upgraded in New Game +)

This is the game’s joke armor of sorts, as it provides no survivability, no damage buffs, and no stealth buffs (until upgraded in New Game+). Its only strength is that it silences the player’s running and sprinting sounds, making it perfect for running up to enemies with their backs turned.

Players who fancy a challenge can use this armor set to play through the game.

Sarugami Armor

Players can acquire this armor set in the Mythic Tale “The Six Blades of Kojiro” on Iki Island. The player will receive the armor upon completion of the Mythic Tale.

Skills:

  • Regular Parry is disabled. Perfect Parry becomes a chain of attacks, and Perfect Dodge becomes an attack
  • All Resolve gains are increased
  • Perfect Parry and Perfect Dodge windows are increased

This armor set is the embodiment of “High Risk High Reward” as players can no longer perform regular parries, and can only perform Perfect Parries and Dodges. However, should the player be successful in performing said actions, they will be able to quickly take down enemies.

That’s all for our guide on the various armor sets players can obtain in  Ghost of Tsushima. Ghost of Tsushima is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC via Green Man Gaming, the Epic Games Store, and Steam.

Do note, however, that the game is not available in numerous countries, specifically those who cannot legally make a PSN account.
