NASCAR road course in Chicago was a beautifully chaotic, rain-soaked disaster

When plans for Sunday's street-circuit race in Chicago were unveiled last summer, those from the NASCAR Cup Series probably didn't envision a rain-soaked smash-a-thon. However, that's what race fans got on Sunday, creating a perfect storm of entertainment.

Following a delay for rain, Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields gave the command to start and fans didn't have to wait long to see chaos ensue.

Only a handful of laps into Sunday's race, several drivers crashed, including Kyle Busch, who careened into a tire barrier and needed to be pulled out to finish the race.

Meanwhile, on Lap 49, a literal traffic jam emerged around Turn 11, eating up nearly a dozen cars. William Byron got caught up on the tire barrier, forcing both Kevin Harvick and Corey LaJoie to spin out, creating a long jam on Chicago's Michigan Avenue.

Drivers slowly but surely backed their way out of trouble, but it'll go down as one of the most unique visuals in NASCAR history.

After Saturday's race was shortened due to weather, rain delayed the start of Sunday's race by roughly an hour. When the race finally began, fittingly, a newcomer, Shane van Gisbergen, jumped to the front of the pack. Through the bedlam on the course, van Gisbergen persevered through it all, accomplishing several historic NASCAR feats.

van Gisbergen became the first New Zealander to win a NASCAR race and the first driver to take the checkered flag in their debut since Johnny Rutherford in 1963.

Sunday's massive NASCAR event wasn't without its hiccups, but now that the first street race is in the books, it looks like a winner for NASCAR.

Whether or not there's a future for these types of races remains to be seen, but it wouldn't be surprising to see a similar affair in another major city sometime soon.
